Directions

80 min.
1. Step

To bake chocolate bread, preheat the oven to 180 degrees Celsius and grease a baking tin well. This step is important to prevent the bread from sticking to the tin.

2. Step

In a large bowl, mix together the wheat flour, sugar, cocoa, baking powder and salt. I find it helpful to mix all the dry ingredients first to ensure that the chocolate and salt are evenly distributed through the batter.

3. Step

In a separate bowl, beat the milk, melted butter and eggs. Make sure to allow the melted butter to cool slightly before adding it to the eggs so as not to overcook them.

4. Step

Add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients and mix well until everything is well combined. It's okay if the batter is a little lumpy, don't overmix it.

5. Step

Now add the coarsely chopped chocolate. I find the dark chocolate gives the bread a richer flavor.

6. Step

Pour the batter into the prepared baking tin and smooth the surface with a spatula.

7. Step

Bake the bread for 60 minutes, or until a toothpick comes out clean when inserted into the center. It is important not to over bake or the bread will be dry.

8. Step

Leave the chocolate bread to cool in the tin before removing it from the tin and cutting it into slices.
